Squeakers Mate Essay Example For Students

Squeakers Mate Essay Having read both stories squeakers mate by Barbara Baynton and the drovers wife by Henry Lawson I preferred the drovers wife and in this piece of writing I am going to explain why.  Both of these stories are short stories and are set in the out back in Australia in the early 20th century. One thing which could have made a different to the way each stories was written was that a drovers wife was written by a male whereas squeakers mate was written by a female. These stories considered the issues women had in that area and time. We will write a custom essay on Squeakers Mate specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now I preferred the plot of squeakers mate because I felt it gave out a stronger message of how women were treated. It shown emotion and made me feels involved in that emotion. I felt more sorry for the women in this story as she had done so much for this man and he had done nothing in return. She had gone from being in complete power and to having nothing. This was a turn around as the man depended on her to do everything for him as he was really lazy and after the accident she was completely dependent on him for food and water. The man completely abandon her on severaly occasions. I felt the narrative flowed better and I could understand what was happening without having to go back and read it again to understand. It gave a huge impact on me to how helpless she became and that her mate did not care for her properly, she was being put through pain. It went though extremes of control and she was left helpless, whereas she used to be in complete control. This would have been very hard for her because her personality is very organised and she likes to get everything done on time and properly so to not have control over even the smallest things would have been hard for her. I though the drovers wife as not as powerful as the message was not as strong and didnt have a great impact on me emotional for the women. I did not have as much sympathy for the characters as it was not written as well, the narrative did not flow as well so I sometimes got confused while reading it and had to go back again. In the drovers wife she had children to help her in her worries. The main characters in squeakers mate were the man and the women (mates) and the second women. The women also had a dog, which was her companion. The man was very ignorant, lazy and stupid. He did not seem to really care about his mate has when the tree fell on her he did not help she insulted her and he did not care for her properly afterwards either. All the work, which the women usually did, was left undone because the man refused to do all the work. The woman in this story is very organised, likes to get the job done, caring, and has a lot of patience. She not only has patients with her self but with her mate and seems to put up with a lot of grief. These two do not have a very good working or personal relationship together I think the women is the only one doing the work in the relationship. The womens dog is very obedient he is her only companion they have a very good relationship and even though he is a dog it seems like he understands her and what she is feeling. The dog is very protective of her for example when the other woman in the story tries to reach the water her attacks the women to protect her.in this story none of the names of the charcters are mentioned I think this is to give the effect that they are slaves of marriage because slaves are never named or it is just to make the charcters 2nd, nothing people or to make it a less personal story so we can change the situation to fit our own maybe.by not naming them you are reinforcing their lowly role. .u959d3b26a4a6b9c66fb4ec041fdf662c , .u959d3b26a4a6b9c66fb4ec041fdf662c .postImageUrl , .u959d3b26a4a6b9c66fb4ec041fdf662c .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u959d3b26a4a6b9c66fb4ec041fdf662c , .u959d3b26a4a6b9c66fb4ec041fdf662c:hover , .u959d3b26a4a6b9c66fb4ec041fdf662c:visited , .u959d3b26a4a6b9c66fb4ec041fdf662c:active { border:0!important; } .u959d3b26a4a6b9c66fb4ec041fdf662c .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u959d3b26a4a6b9c66fb4ec041fdf662c { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u959d3b26a4a6b9c66fb4ec041fdf662c:active , .u959d3b26a4a6b9c66fb4ec041fdf662c:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u959d3b26a4a6b9c66fb4ec041fdf662c .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u959d3b26a4a6b9c66fb4ec041fdf662c .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u959d3b26a4a6b9c66fb4ec041fdf662c .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u959d3b26a4a6b9c66fb4ec041fdf662c .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u959d3b26a4a6b9c66fb4ec041fdf662c:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u959d3b26a4a6b9c66fb4ec041fdf662c .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u959d3b26a4a6b9c66fb4ec041fdf662c .u959d3b26a4a6b9c66fb4ec041fdf662c-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u959d3b26a4a6b9c66fb4ec041fdf662c:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: The final scene of 'Of Mice and Men' EssayI feel the women in the a drovers wife does not have as nice a character and I feel for the other women more. I think her situation is not quite so bad and that I have more pity for the other women. They both become dependent on their man but certainly squeakers mate is to the more extreme.  Having explored these issues I still feel squeakers mate was the better story.  In both stories the author looks at the womens place in the society, the hard and different lifestyle they have in the Australian out back. There is a lack of education and marriage situations were not very good. I believe that handled these situations better it used more emotions and stronger feelings of the grinding poverty of squeakers mate. Overall I think that squeakers mate uses better language and direct speech to show the characters feelings effectively, it uses colloquial language. This meant I could understand the atmosphere and setting better giving me a clearer idea of the characters personalities and feelings so I could understand the story better. As I have said the main reason why I thought squeakers mate was the better story was because I felt for the women more. The story used emotion much better by using extreme circumstances.

How to Start a New Semester Strongly

How to Start a New Semester Strongly Knowing how to start a semester strongly can be one of the most important skills to learn during your time in college. After all, the choices you make during the first few weeks (and even days) of a new semester can have long-lasting effects. So just where should you focus your efforts? New Semester Basics Get a time management system. Managing your time just may be your biggest challenge while in college. Find something that works for you and use it from day one. (Not sure where to start? Learn tips for managing your time in college.)Take a reasonable course load. Taking 20 units (or more!) this semester may sound great in theory, but it most likely will come back to haunt you in the long run. Sure, it may seem like a good way to improve your transcript, but the lower grades you might get because your course load is too heavy is a sure way to bring your transcript down, not up. If you absolutely must carry a heavy course load for some reason, however, make sure that youve cut down on your other commitments so that you dont put too many unreasonable expectations on yourself.Have your books purchased or at least on their way. Not having your books the first week of class can put you behind everyone else before you even had the chance to start. Even if you have to go to the library for the first week or two to get the reading done, make sure youre doing what you can to stay on top of your homework until your books arrive. Have some but not too much co-curricular involvement. You dont want to be so over-involved that you barely have time to eat and sleep, but you most likely do need to be involved in something other than your classes all day long. Join a club, get an on-campus job, volunteer somewhere, play on an intramural team: just do something to keep your brain (and personal life!) balanced.Get your finances in order. You may be rocking your classes, but if your financial situation is a mess, you wont be able to finish the semester. Make sure your finances are in order when you start a new semester and that theyll still be that way as you head toward finals week.Have your life logistics worked out. These are different for every college student, but having the basics like your housing/roommate situation, your food/dining options, and your transportation worked out in advance is critical to making it through the semester in a stress-free way.Set up healthy outlets for fun and to relieve stress. You dont need to have a Ph.D. to know that college is stressful. Have things already in place like good groups of friends, exercise plans, hobbies, and smart ways to avoid pitfalls (like knowing how to avoid test anxiety) that will allow you to mentally check out and relax when things get intense. Get information on where to go for help you know, just in case. When, and if, you find yourself juggling more than you can handle, trying to find help while under that kind of stress is nearly impossible. Learn where to go for help before your semester begins so that, just in case things get a little rough, your small speed bump doesnt turn into a major disaster zone.

Negligent misstatement is based on a special relationship being Essay

Negligent misstatement is based on a special relationship being proven. By discussing relevant case law, explain how this - Essay Example Special Relationship in negligent misstatement Special relationship in law is regarded as a situation in which a party relies on a professional’s skills and experience of a professional to undertake certain actions or omissions. It is worth noting that professionals are people with impeccable knowledge and skills on myriad of issues depending on their area of expertise. Charlesworth (2008) says that due to their unique skills and experience, majority of people usually depends on their input before they act. Whenever one seeks the services of another in a professional capacity, the professional has a duty of care and as such should offer his advice or act with caution. In court proceedings where the subject matter is negligent misstatement, the court considers several factors in order to determine if there is any form of material misstatement. In fact, the courts consider three critical elements whenever they are dealing with the issue of special relationship in the context of negligent misrepresentation. One such factor is that the plaintiff relied on the skills and judgment of the defendant to make certain acts or omission. The other element is that the defendant ought to be aware or was aware of the fact that the Plaintiff was relying on him to make certain acts or omission. ... The court of appeal established that the case qualified for negligent misrepresentation by the defendant and that there existed special relationship between Dick Bentley Productions and Harold Smith. The case, therefore, satisfied all the requirements of material misrepresentation, which include the fact that the plaintiff, Harold Smith Ltd, relied on the skills and judgment of the defendant, Dick Bentley Productions, to make certain the decision of purchasing the Bentley. The other element is that the defendant, Dick Bentley Productions, was aware of the fact that the Plaintiff, Harold Smith Ltd, was relying on him to make certain acts or omission. Finally, the circumstances reasonably alluded to the fact that the defendant was aware that the defendant was relying upon his advice. The defendant was a dealer in Bentley and as such; he was in a better position to tell the correct mileage of Bentley because he was a dealer in Bentley. For the special relationship to hold in court proce edings involving negligent misstatement there is need to prove that, the defendant was a professional who had the knowledge, experience, and judgment on the subject matter. In Oscar Chess Ltd v Williams (1957) 1 WLR, the defendant had falsely stated the age of the car to the dealer in a part exchange transaction. The court held that although there was a statement, the defendant was not in a position to tell the true age of the car to the plaintiff since the former was not a professional in the field. The statement of the defendant was therefore held to be representational. In his judgment, the judge alluded to the fact that the plaintiff could have at least bothered to verify the details that were

Profitability And Sustainability Analysis Of Superstore Industry Marketing Essay

Profitability And Sustainability Analysis Of Superstore Industry Marketing Essay There are several framework on the financial performance have been became apparent during last couple of decades and most of them relates to social and financial performance, which are mainly associated around the corporate social responsibility and performance concept . Only few of the study emerged to evaluate financial performance and the sustainability of competitive advantage. Furthermore, most of the work has been associated with industry level but not the firm level, which is also more important to consider in the study on micro level. This is one the strong reason to investigate the firm level financial performance and the competitive advantage. However, there are some limitation related to data gathering for the industry analysis but it seems feasible to gather or access company level data and their availability. World Food Retail Overview After development in technology and policies in 1990, huge change in food industry has begun. With evolution in business globalisation, activities like mergers and acquisition has amplified which resulted growth of big players in efficient and dominant way. Globalisation also resulted an increase in tours and travel activities across the world. The expenses incurred on food and drink by a tourist is 30p on every  £1.00, as per survey conducted by regional tourist bodies of England, UK (IGD Global Retail Outlook Survey, August 2007). Among various sector, retail food sector create more value than that of others. The Organized food sector is such an area where both strong management system and sectorial operational specialization i.e. human and technology are mainly affected by large volume, Daily splitting in physical operations and lower margins, food retail in world are acumen and influenced by six basic trends: Uncertainty Variable Demographics Growth will/necessity Low Price Madness Technology Globalization It has been forecasted that the speed in retail globalization will further accelerate. In order to success, the competition between retailers and suppliers are more likely to increase in a diversified range of capability. Even though in retail sector, huge opportunities still exist, but success will depend on managing the risk and challenges at the same time by capturing the opportunities. According to IGD, In order to obtain sustainable growth, Retail Globalization has shifted its focus from flag-planting to targeted expansion. IGD conducted a survey in 12 countries where senior retailers and supplier has been questioned to derive the above statement (IGDs Global Retail Outlook Survey in August 2007), The top five supermarket companies in United Kingdom control a 50 percent share in market where as in Germany it is 60 percent and in France 90 percent (AC Nielsen). Industry Overview The top five biggest United Kingdom retailers and food selling companies influence the whole market, which are Tesco, Morrison, Sainsburys, Asda and Co-operative Group. In 2004, the whole market size was  £115 billion which includes the retailers from small shops who has store to the biggest supermarkets which have the full-scale operating chains. In 2004, Morrison ranked at 4th position among other 12 supermarkets in UK, which is illustrated below in Table (1). Whereas in 2008 February 79.4% market share captured by top 5 retailers i.e.30.9% by Tesco, 16.4% by Sainsburys, 11.6% by Morrison, 16.9% by Asda and 4.0% by Waitrose. Only 20.6% of market share has been left for others. With the above positioning Morrison can be concluded as upper-medium size food and grocery retailer in United Kingdom. Supermarket 2004 (%) 2005 (%) Aldi n/a 2.2 Asda 16.7 16.5 Co-op 4.8 n/a Iceland 2.1 1.9 Somerfield n/a 5.7* Lidl 1.8 n/a Marks and Spencer 3.5 n/a Morrison 14.6** 12.2** Netto 0.6 n/a Sainsburys 15.7 15.9 Tesco 29 29.8 Waitrose 3.5 3.7 To create portfolio, in same industry, five companies has been selected i.e. Tesco, Finsbury Food, Sainsburys, Thottons and Falkaland. In segregation, Sainsburys and Tesco are biggest supermarket, whereas Finsbury Food and Thorttons are the medium ones and Falkaland is small stores in UK. According to total asset, these portfolios almost represent the industry. Hence it is tried to increase the sample for closer representation of the population which is illustrated below in Table (2): UK Companies Size ( £) Falkland 24.25 Finsbury Food 102.60 Thorntorns 106.02 Morrison 7,370.90 Sainbarys 9,576.00 TESCO 24,775.00Table(2): the position of Morrison in the whole UKs industry according to total assets (2008) Business Drivers for sustainability strategies: There are various internal and external factors which might drives the growth in sustainability strategies in WM Morrisons and major supermarkets: Employees Communities Sustainable Product Development Competitors Green Buildings Waste Transportation and Logistics Costs Carbon Efficiency Rising Demand for Certified Products Expectation for Reporting and Performance Measurement Product Safety The above mentioned drivers are the key to change the retail sectors outlooks and providing competitive benefit to the retailers in terms of sustainability performance. Furthermore, competitive benefit can be drive by working with more innovative solution provider; brand owner and supply chain partners, which leads to reduce the cost the increases efficiency. Apart from above factors, supermarkets have already implemented a number of growth/sustainability strategies to achieve high growth. These are: Increasing focus into own label products. Expansion by organic growth and acquisition Convenience Sector Expansion Focus into nonà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ food items Graph 1 : Profit Margins of UK Supermarkets About Wm Morrison Supermarkets With acquisition of larger rival Safeway plc., Wm Morrison Supermarkets moved up in UK food chain. Founded in 1899, from 125 stores Wm Morrison runs approximately 425 stores in England and Scotland. It has already made a history beating UK supermarket giants like Tesco (the UKs No. 1 food retailer) and ASDA (Wal-Mart owned supermarket) in high concentrated acquisition battle. Through its Market Street specialty, Morrisons offer various food and non-food items. Morrison sell gas about 290 locations. With acquisition of Safeway, Wm Morrison enhanced its market presence with more than 12% share of grocery market. Aim of the Study The aim of this research is based on two objectives. The first objective is to examine the profitability of the WM Morrison within the superstore industry context in the UK market and secondly to examine the firms sustainability of competitive advantage on retail performance. Preliminary Literature Review The analysis of firm profitability is a bit difficult task because the majority of the performance indicator models focus on the success of various key financial indicators i.e. return on investment (ROI), return on assets (ROA) or return on capital employed (ROCE). These performance indicator models have been disapproved or criticized due to lack in the multiple dimensional approach of the performance as well as the its competitive advantages to organizations growth (Brignall and Ballantine, 1996). There are number of studies (Dawson,2005; Dess and Robinson,1984; Reynolds et al.,2005; Venkatraman and Ramanujam,1986) have faced challenge to consider right variables as a financial performance indicator. The understanding of the correct information and its non-availability to the public are the most common problems (Ailawadi et al., 1995). However, a number of alternative approaches have been implemented to getting best financial performance indicator in to order to handle above discussed problems. Therefore, subjective financial indicators are designed to measure firms performance i.e managers forecast on financial performance to compare with competitors performance. Although, some financial indictors has been considered in the number of empirical study (Capon et al.,1990; Dawson, 2005; Reynolds et al., 2005), which was significantly positive with the economic models. The most frequently used profitability indicator in the various studies could be return on equity, return on sale and return on investment etc. But still it is unconcluded regarding the best financial indicators to measure retail financial performance ( Ailawadi et al.,1995; Dawson,2005; Reynolds et al., 2005).On the other hand, the most commonly used performance indicators are rates of return, gross margin (Bradley and Taylor, 1992; Dobson, 2005; Reynolds et al., 2005) and sales growth, sales revenue (Doyle and Hooley,1992; Dobson,2005; Greenley,1995; Hooley et al.,1992; Reynolds et al.,2005). The accepted distinction between competitive advantage and sustained competitive advantage is matched by a range of studies which forward and debate the factors determining the sustainability of a competitive advantage (see Coyne, 1985; Williams, 1992). Whilst many of the studies of advantage sustainability are conducted from a resource based view, Porter (1980, 1990) contributes a number of observations at a more macro level. Briefly, Porter (1980) suggests that competitive advantage can only be sustained over time if consistent strategy is developed and applied promptly. Research Objective and Data Methodology An attempt has been made in this paper to analyze the profitability and examine the sustainability of competitive advantage on retail performance of the WM Morrison during 2005 -2010. Eventually top players will be identifying on the basis of total asset in UK superstore market. To identify competitors, Lexis-Nexis and Hoovers will be used. 5 years Balance sheet and other financial data will be extracted from Thomson One banker. The profitability of Morrison will be analyzed through decomposition method in context to peer group. Statistical analysis may be conducted as a support to the thesis. After performance analysis of Morrison, Industry performance will be compared to target company performance to analyze abnormality if any in the behavior pattern and the reason behind the pattern will be scrutinized. Analysis Factors: Return on Net Operating Assets (RNOA) Net Borrowing Cost (NBC) Operating profit margin Operating Liability Leverage Financial Liability Leverage (FLEV) Asset Turnover (ATO) Return on Common Equity (ROCE) Spread However one of the main aims is to analyze the driving factors for the performance of the firm and the industry and simultaneously to discuss the sustainability strategies of the firm for the competitive advantage. Lennie and George in Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck Essay

Lennie and George are considerably different from the other ranch workers mainly unlike the workers who are all shown to be lonely, George and Lennie have each other. They relay on each other and their dreams together. There is a bond of trust and friendship between the two main characters which is tragically highlighted in the closing lines of the novel. The novel ‘Of Mice and Men’ by John Steinbeck is set in the early 1930’s following the collapse of the New York wall street market known as the depression years. In this time there was heavy unemployment; migrant workers from all over America came to California where the novel is set in the Salinas valley in search of prospects of work. The ranch itself is a microcosm of the life for migrant workers in that time, their insecurities are shown through the characters such as Curley, Candy, Curley’s wife and also the life of Black people through Crooks. All the characters are lonely except for Lennie and George who have each other and this is shown through their hopes and dreams. Lennie and Georges history together opens up when George talks to Slim a character that everyone respects, even Curley. George openly speaks to Slim about the incident when George tells Lennie to jump into the river jokingly, but to everyone’s surprise Lennie jumps in without questioning George not realising he cannot swim and almost drowns if George didn’t rescue him, even then Lennie thanks George for saving him even though it was George who told him to do it in the first place. At this point George’s fear is shown at Leannie’s inability to comprehend logical and illogical things, George realises at that moment that if he is not careful Lennie could do the wrong thing again. George’s other fears are also shown in the incident at weed, while talking about it to slim he describes Lennie being ‘slow’ as he likes to touch everything he likes, just wants to feel it. So he reaches to feel a girls red dress and the girl screams, Lennie gets scared all he can think to do is hold on and that George had to hit him with a fence picket to make him let go. Again Lennie’s strength becomes an issue and the writer almost foretelling the future. George is afraid of Lennie not understanding right from wrong and his strength scares George making him think that he might to  what he did at weed again. Lennie is shown to be a child in a mans body . throughout the book he wants to be told their dream almost like a bed time story and doesn’t feel closure until he has been told it. And again like a child he likes soft and fury things relating to the reason why he likes to touch dresses. Lennie’s greatest fear of the all is that he won’t be able to tend the rabbits if he did something wrong like the incident at weed again, he is also afraid of his own strength and not being able to let go. Lennie and George’s dream of having a place of their own ‘living of the fat of the land’ and Lennie and his alfalfa patch and tending the rabbits, keep’s them going and hoping that they won’t have to worry about Lennie doing the wrong things again, and George being able to do what he wants do and not think about what will happen to Lennie. Their dreams create hope for other characters like Candy and Crooks even for a short while. On the face of it, it appears that Lennie, because of his mental immaturity, is totally reliant upon George for his survival and for obtaining work at various ranches. Equally important however, is the extent to which George relies on Lennie for companionship in the generally unfriendly and lonely environment of the migrant labourer. As George admits to Slim when discussing himself and Lennie ‘it’s a lot nicer to go around with a guy you know’. It can be seen; therefore that George might not be with Lennie purely out of a sense of pity or duty to Lennie’s aunt Clara. From the start of the novel Steinbeck raises the questions in the minds of the reader about why these characters should be involved in such an unlikely partnership: George is short of stature, intelligent and projects self-confidence, Lennie on the other hand, is a giant of a man, ponderous in his gait and his mind of a young child. The course of events that unfold are tragic, most of it starts with Curley and his insecurity about his height and his always willing to pick a fight with bigger men to prove he is not weak. Steinbeck calls him calculating and  pugnacious and gives him reptilian animal like qualities representing his behaviour to a crocodile while Lennie is shown to have bear and horse like qualities compared to animals with admirable traits. Ch 3 begins when Curley busts in looking for Slim who he thinks is with his wife. When Slim re-enters the room telling Curley that he’s sick of Curley asking him about his wife. Curley can’t fight with Slim so he moves to Carlson who warns him not to pick a fight with him, as they all join in Curley feels defenceless and so turns on to Lennie given any excuse to fight with him. As Curley begins to fight him, Lennie gives out a cry of terror and turns to George for help as he was too frightened to defend himself. George immediately gets onto his feet yelling ‘Give it to him Lennie, don’t let him do it’. George was afraid of Lennie’s strength but he wouldn’t let Lennie go down like that he was protective over him. As Curley goes for another blow to the blood covered face, Lennie grabs his fist. Curley is described to be flopping as a fish. Then just like in weed Lennie held on to the closed fist being crushed by Lennie’s hand. It took both George and Slim to make Lennie let go. Curley was warned not to say a word about what happened. After this Curley’s wife became very interested in what happened actually happened to Curley’s hand but nobody spoke to her. When Lennie kills the pup in the barn, while wondering what to do Curley’s wife comes in. even though he shouldn’t talk to her he does, she tells him how she is lonely and just wants someone to talk too, also how unhappy she is in her marriage to Curley, this is the only point in the novel where her story comes out, how she was never loved at home, how she married Curley to get away from her life, her dreams of becoming famous in movies. As Lennie feels her hair vents repeat themselves he can’t let go and in her struggle to get free and Lennie’s fear that she will call George he breaks her neck in attempt to silence her again his inability to control his strength has taken a turn for the worst. He realises what he has done and remembers that if he did anything bad George said to go to the brush where he’d find him there, so Lennie quickly and quietly leaves. Candy is the first to find her in the barn and gets George who knows instantly what has  happened he tells candy to let him go to the bunk house first then tell the rest of them so he doesn’t look involved. There dream is destroyed and candy blames Curley’s wife, when he tells the rest of them Curley shows no sign of remorse all he can do is think about getting Lennie back. As they all take off to find Lennie, George manages to find him first by the lake; even now he is still afraid he won’t be able to tend the rabbits. George knows that there is no way out for them, knowing Curley he would just want to kill him he wouldn’t put him in jail, and if he let him go the Lennie couldn’t look after himself he would die without food, shelter and someone to look after him. George knew that he would have to kill him when he found Lennie. Just like Candy’s dog to put him out of his misery for the sake of Lennie. Also he couldn’t let someone else do it he told Lennie about their dream one last time as he told it he quietly put the gun to the back of Lennie’s head without him realising and shot him, it was a sympathy kill. At the end it is Slim who comforts him in telling George that he had to do it. Bibliography: Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck

Group Proposal: develop a proposal for a group Essay

When the friction heats up in marriages, more people (10-20%) than ever before are considering getting professional help. That is very wise. We may be making progress. I am still disturbed that most do not seek help. What is wrong with the other 80%? Getting therapy seems so reasonable to me; it seems that every friend, every parent, every child, every relative, and every professional person in contact with the unhappy couple should recommend counseling. Why don’t they? Divorce is such an emotionally laden decision (perhaps more so than who to marry), we need help seeing the situation realistically, trying to resolve the problems, deciding what other alternatives exist, considering the consequences to others, making reasonable plans for our future, etc. Anyone going though marital hell or a divorce needs a friend to talk to and vent with, no doubt, but he/she needs much more than that–a wise, experienced, unemotional but empathic and caring counselor and a group of peop le who can relate. We are freer than we have been for centuries to dissolve an unhappy marriage. There are other factors associated with the increasing divorce rate. Many of these social-economic factors would be considered good, e.g. more equal education and job opportunities for women, higher incomes, fewer children, fewer religious restrictions, and general social acceptance of divorce and of women living alone. Yet, as we will see, there are terrible consequences frequently associated with divorce (and with continuing a bad marriage). Over 75% of Americans accept divorce as a solution when a couple can’t get along, even if they have children. There is concern by some that divorce may have become too easy (few people who have personally gone through a divorce consider it easy). But, what about those who are happily married and newly weds? Why not help a relationship strengthen before it gets to that point of divorce or feeling helpless? I would like to start a Support Group for newly married couples. These couples are not troubled couples but rather couples who want to enrichen their marriage and have the support of other newly married couples. Our society is built so much on how marriages fail but forget so easily those who work hard daily to keep their marriage healthy. Newly married couples need to know there are other couples out there who are making and succeeding  in this hard world. They need to know, yes, marriage is hard, but this is what we are doing to make it work. Therefore, I would like to propose a Support group called â€Å"Spousal Support†. Spousal Support would include all newly married couples who do not have serious marital issues. Those who are just married to ten years of marriage. Couples who are looking for support of other couples, building friendships, and other marriage enrichment resources. Couples who will be accepted into the group are those who feel they are alone in being happily married, or put down for saying they are happily married. The percent of married people who say they are â€Å"very happy† has gone down during the last 20 years, especially among women. â€Å"Happily married couples have rosy illusions about their marriage and they idealize their spouse. The more illusions, the happier the couple† (Azar, 1995). This Ideal stated here is the reason why more and more being a happy couple is in the minority and a support group is needed. A support group that believes being happily married is something you have to work on but is possible. Ursula K. LeGuin once said; â€Å"Love doesn’t just sit there, like a stone, it has to be made, like bread; re-made all the time, made new. Screening and selection of couples will be done through an interview. The interview will consist of questions about their relationship and what they want to get out of Spousal Support. Those who are not experiencing major marital issues and want support in their marriage will be accepted. Couples who are considering divorce, infidelity or other major marital issues will not be accepted into this group. Any couple who has been married ten years or less, and considers themselves happily married. Couples who have been married for less than ten years are many times considered either still in the â€Å"honey moon† stage or are considering Divorce. Regardless the first ten years can be hard, not just because you are working out your marriage but because of society pressures. This group will consist of five couples, meeting once a week on Sunday at 4 p.m. for 16 weeks. There will be a break of a month and new members will be  able to join at that time. The group will determine a convenient private meeting place and occasionally take outings to local venues. Group members will be briefed during the initial interview as to what will take place and what is expected in the group. Also discussed will be goals that each couple would like to make. Ground rules for the group will be open for discussion during the first meeting: Couples must always be as a couple never alone Please be timely Please be respectful and caring of other couples and relationships Confidentiality is very important Topics explored will consist of any marriage enrichment discussions, exercises, resources and free for all night once a month. Discussions would include any issues that may come about in day-to-day lives like finding intimate time together, free time, working on careers, building a family, and any outside pressures. Exercises would include questionnaires, inventories, role-playing, communication exercises, and games. Resources are very valuable to have, like a good self-help book, or videos, even ideas to help the couple be there for one another. A free for all night will be given for any topics that couples may want to talk about or focus an entire meeting on in the future. This will allow them to throw out ideas in a less structured tone. Couple will be given time to bond more freely with each other and plan any outings the group will take. The specific outcomes I would like the group members to attain is knowing that a marriage can succeed and not every issue has to be hard. I would like them to realize that there are other couples out there who work hard at making the marriage work. My last outcome I would like the group members to have is resources and ways for them to work through their problems and strengthen their marriage in a healthy way.

Free Essays on Language And Communication In Elementary Mathematics Teaching Free Essays on Language And Communication In Elementary Mathematics Teaching Introduction Somewhere between Vygotsky and Piaget; somewhere between Newton determining the laws of the universe alone with his apple tree, and Andrew Wiles proving Fermat’s last theorem with the aid of his colleagues around the world; somewhere between learning the 3Rs by rote under a strict schoolmaster beating down the slightest whisper, and the neo-pragmatist’s ‘knowledge is conversation’ ideal mathematics lesson of total discourse; somewhere between these opposite ends of their various spectra lies the true role of language and conversation in the mathematics class. If it is the responsibility of the mathematics teacher to encourage students to talk in the classroom (Steele, 1998) then it is more so the responsibility to ensure that that discussion does not damage students’ mathematical learning (Sfard et al, 1998). Orey (1998) proposes that learning mathematics makes powerful problem solvers who can break down complex problems into understandable elements and create clear effective and even original solutions. Successful mathematics students, according to Schielack (2000), can read critically, identify fallacies, detect bias, assess risk and suggest alternative solutions. Cotton (1999) postulates thus that mathematics provides both access to positions of power and the ability to critically analyse the decisions of those in power. If all children then do have a right to the power of mathematics (Wickett, 2000), then the teacher has a responsibility to give all students access. The mathematics register and lexical ambiguity At the beginning of mathematical learning is the language of mathematics - that set of words the mathematician uses to express mathematical concepts and activities: the mathematical register. A well-defined, universally accepted vocabulary of terms and expressions allows mathematics to be studied the same way the world over. (Booker et al, 1997). Therein lies the problem. Waxing and Waning

Waxing and Waning Waxing and Waning Waxing and Waning By Maeve Maddox The most familiar use of the verbs wax and wane is in reference to the states of the moon. To wax is to grow. To wane is to diminish. The moon has four phases, also called quarters. During the first two quarters, the moon is said â€Å"to wax† as its light increases. During the third and fourth quarters, as its light decreases, the moon is said â€Å"to wane.† The verbs wax and wane are often used to describe the growing and lessening of interest in a subject: My interest  in Shakespeare has always  waxed  and waned.   Sadly, as my interest waxed, the interest of my sponsor appeared to wane. My interest  in cars  began to wane  in direct relationship to the run-up in prices. In writing and speech, the verb wax may be followed by an adjective to describe the manner in which something is being said. â€Å"To wax poetic† is to speak with enthusiasm and hyperbole on a favorite subject: A grizzled  New  Orleans bartender  waxing poetic  on  his  favorite drink, the Mint Julip, as he makes  his  last one. Apple brilliantly  waxes poetic  in  new  iPad Air ad Prabal Gurung Waxed Poetic About His Militant Women Similar in meaning is the expression â€Å"to wax lyrical†: Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger talks up Jackson Martinez transfer after waxing lyrical about the Porto forward Like Spengler, they  waxed lyrical about  war and violence â€Å"as the superior form of human existence.†Ã‚   Feelings of angry disdain are expressed by the phrase â€Å"to wax indignant†: General Grant waxed indignant  at  his  fathers crass attempt to profit from  his  sons military [success]. Do not weep; do not wax indignant. Understand.- Baruch Spinoza House Speaker Robert DeLeo waxed indignant Wednesday, forcefully denying claims by federal prosecutors that he let fellow legislators fill jobs in the Probation Department in exchange for their votes for the speakership. Wax is also used in reference to less passionate states of feeling. For example, one can wax silent or sentimental: Agnes  waxed silent, pleased most with the joy of her own thoughts.   Anrion waxed silent as a couple strolled beside them, waiting until they had walked a safe distance away before asking, â€Å"Have you ever heard of Eregion?† Justice Thomas waxed sentimental about the good old days when teachers managed classrooms with an iron hand. Cobos waxed sentimental about being a country boy and announced that this was why he and his wife moved to the Upper Valley themselves. Want to improve your English in five minutes a day? Strategic decision making mechanisms available to deal with airport Essay

Strategic decision making mechanisms available to deal with airport development at the national and local levels - Essay Example It seems that in the area of strategic planning, the British airline industry needs several alterations and improvements in order to meet the challenges set within the global market. The delays in the application of the relevant projects as described above could affect the performance of the industry towards its competitors and for this reason appropriate plans of action should be designed in order to support the improvement of the particular industry in the long term. Current paper refers to the strategic decision making options/ methods that can be used in the airport development in Britain. Towards this direction, general principles and schemes of strategic decision making procedure will be presented while the current trends that characterize airport development in Britain are also going to be analyzed. On the other hand, a comparison with the conditions that apply in the relevant sector of Ireland has been considered to be necessary in order to understand the elements of airport development and their role within different markets. In this way, any possible differentiation among the British and the Irish market regarding the airport development will be revealed offering valuable information on the formulation and application of strategic decision making mechanisms in both the above countries. The main aspects of the airport development in Britain are presented in the White Paper â€Å"The Future of Air Transport† which published by the British government in December 2003. In accordance with this paper, current efforts in UK regarding the airport development in the various regions across the country focus on the following issues: ‘a) A new runway at Stansted, to be operational by 2011/12; b) A third runway at Heathrow, as long as legal air quality limits are not breached. If this is not possible, Gatwick will have the runway instead, to be operational by 2020; c) A new runway in Birmingham; d) Also, existing airports
